I loved Albania. Lots of eurotrash from Italy and Spain and Netherlands there becase it's close and dirt cheap. It will be decades before it gets high end stuff so if you don't mind lots of eerie shit in your hotel room then it's cr.

Sarajevo is one of the coolest places I have been in past 10 years. I dropped a side trip to Mostar bc I liked Sarajevo so much.

Weather hit or miss in july/August. U could have 90 degrees in Warsaw and breezy beach day across Mediterranean. But inland cities like Rome generally suck balls in summer.

Rome is really interesting but filled with tourists most of the year. I went in March most recently and it was good. I would not want to be there during the summer or around big catholic holidays like Eater or Christmas. (I almost went there this spring, but decided to go somewhere further south on the Mediterranean. Very happy I wasn’t there for the pope’s death as it would have been a complete zoo.)

I’d echo the answers in this thread. South of France is CR but super expensive that time of year. There are a lot of small towns between Marseilles and Nice where you could find a good house to rent. For more reasonable prices, look to towns in the hills north of the ocean/highway like Biot or Cagnes-sur-Mer. Just make sure it has a pool because you won’t want to have to trek to the beach every day and it will be hot.

Greek islands are CR but make sure you pick the right one. Sounds like you want someplace that’s not all party all the time.

Parts of Italy will be overrun with tourists (Amalfi coast, etc.), but I’m sure some small towns would be fine. Plenty of nice parts of Spain and Portugal - they will be busy and expensive but not as bad as prime South of France or spots in Santorini/Mykonos. You could also look at Mallorca, the Canary Islands, etc.

Happy to dish out chill Greek island suggestions, have been to ~30 Greek islands at this point and try to avoid party. In Italy also reco the Cilento coast area to avoid the Amalfi/Capri crowds. Trying Calabria this summer which I hope will also have less tourists.

Some of my favs include: Paxos/Antipaxos, Kefalonia (Fiskardo), Zakynthos, Koufonisia, Kalymnos, Spetses, Karpathos, Naxos, Sifnos, Patmos, Kimolos. Just avoid the TTTouristy shit islands which now extend all the way down to smaller but overhyped ones like Milos.

Why would you want to be in South of France in the summer without walking distance(or directly) on the beach and outside of major city, i.e. not nice. You can stay in a swimming pool in shicago.

Much of the coast line there is rocky--though small stones not big ones. The sand in Nice and other areas is brought in from quarries and much of that area is subject to having to go to a beach club. It is hot as fuck most of the day when you would be awake and only really tolerable late in the afternoon. In a villa, by contrast, you can have a nice chill pool ready whenever, and plenty of actual shade (not just an umbrella). And you don't have to deal with crowds, getting sand all over your shit, etc. You can then go out in Nice or Antibes at night. The night life is not on par with St. Tropez, but it's probably better for families with kids.

Good sleeper pick along with Biarritz. Forgot about those. Would also add the lakes region in Austria and Como/Mennagio/Maggiore in Italy and Lugano. Also pretty much anywhere in Switzerland that has a lake (including Lugano). All of these border on sleepy, though.

Working on a faggy euro itinerary right now. Something like this:

Starting in Berlin because brother in law lives there so we’ll stay at his place.

Flying to trieste Italy (looks like a chill little town very close to Slovenia and Croatia)

Then head to Ljubljana, lake bled and lake bohinj.

Drive through Vrsic pass to bovec/soca river valley

Maybe Head to istrian peninsula in Croatia from there
