Did Nintendo's Howard Phillips have a realistic path to the 1992 presidency?

He inexplicably left Nintendo in 1991 at the height of his popularity; many thought he was testing the waters for a presidential run but it never materialized.
Strangely, an unrelated man also coincidentally named "Howard Phillips" did end up running under the Constitution Party banner. What actually happened here? Did whatever "Republican dirty tricks" Ross Perot alluded to also happen to Phillips?
