My Madmen hot take is that they could’ve cast someone uglier/less credibly fuckable or who was a worse actor and the whole show doesn’t work. An essential component is the buy-in by women who think to themselves “patriarchy or not I’d definitely fuck that guy” and guys thinking “yeah I definitely think my mom or aunt would’ve cheated on my dad or uncle if they had been in her position.” An uglier, less charismatic lead would have made it rapey as fuck, and given the metoo stories about Weiner on that show and others I’d suggest it wasn’t his vision that inspired that part of the show (color me shocked that the bald, rat-faced man didn’t have a subtle command of these dynamics). The casting director should get half of Weiner’s Emmys.

You can think the characters were weird or unrealistic or whatever, and sure they were at times.

Also, I agree with the OP to the extent that when I first watched this show, I was kind of optimistic about my own career and I saw Don Draper as someone I should look up to, etc. Now, I look at those episodes and I can see what a complete fuck up he is and how unrealistic he is. I can also see that the underlying message that Don was just some diamond-in-the-rough talent that was so good it overshadowed all of his personal failings is complete and total bullshit. No talent is good enough to get away with murder the way he did for 10 years on that show. The whole sub-plot about them firing him was 5 seasons overdue, and his redemptive arc and then setting off a WMD to get back in is so tortured and implausible, but this is what writers do. They are trying to complete the narrative. Give them a break.

1. Lucky Strike - first episode, he nearly shits the bed then repeats the tag line from the brand's 1920s advertising in the meeting. Lucky Strike was the biggest firm client.

2. Menken's - Don really offends the client at the first meeting. Later they do win the account but it's not because of Don being Don or maybe it is, that's ambiguous.

3. Utz Potato Chips - Don is out getting drunk and this unfolds the entire Jimmy Barrett storyline in Season 2.

4. He fails to get American Airlines after being directed to cast off Mohawk Airlines.

5. He completely disappears on a business trip to Southern California and doesn't return for weeks. In the meantime he gets no work.

6. Conrad Hilton - he brings in the account and then fails.

7. Heinz Beans - he's down on his nuts and he gets the guy in the door and almost loses the account because of his crap work until the last minute.

8. They sacrifice that relationship for Heinz Ketchup, which Don fails to secure.

9. Jaguar - he impulsively ends the relationship before consulting with anyone.

10. Hershey's - he shits the bed in the meeting.

11. He impulsively writes the anti-tobacco letter in the NYTimes without consulting his partners and therefore the Firm faces huge headwinds trying to win that work in the future.
