you drink a lot, get bored with your go to, and start "exploring" and intellectualizing your addiction. wine is especially easy to do this with because there are so many varieties from all over the world with long histories you can spend a lifetime learning about. bourbon otoh is a joke. i mean it's good but jfc bro it's not that complicated.

if you're smart and patient with wine you basically drink for free. buy a case on allocation, sit on it for ten years, sell 8 of them, keep 4.

i'm talking about $1,000+ bottles. there's hardly any leg work. you buy it, you put it in your cellar, then you sell it through a broker. easy peasy.

How you use your time and space is your deal, and I'm not going to judge you for it. But I would hazard a guess that if you invested that $1,000k/bottle over 10 years, you'd already be drinking for free without any of that time, space, and legwork shit

Outting yourself as a prole New Yorker who doesn’t have space for a case of wine here. The average middle class American has a basement that could easily serve as wine cellar, and can receive a wine delivery with minimal hassle.

But ok yes it is a shitty investment and anyone who treats wine as a portfolio is either rationalizing alcoholism or a weird autistic hoarder.

Excuse to drink more. My wife tells people I collect bourbon. My "collection" is about a dozen bottles, including maybe 6 bottles of rare breed and 4 or five knob creek 12 year because I find them enjoyable, available, and reasonably priced. If she ever asks whether I'm "pouring another one?" I just tell her it's for research purposes, she doesn't register that they're mostly the same.

idgi why this is considered a "good thing"

like, "oh I can't enjoy just any wine. It has to be this very special limited selection." Meanwhile I'm prolely drinking wine out of a box and it's fine. I don't think that other guy actually *enjoys* his wine more than I do in an absolute sense, he's just blown out those particular dopamine receptors to such an extent. Therefore he has to spend $40 a bottle

i don't view consumption in that way. for income, net worth, home value, kindness, test scores, athletic ability, etc. i definitely shoot for being in the top 1%.

consuming is gauche and trying to "have the best of everything" is stupid and means you have shitty values.

I’m into paying for bottles that cost 15-25 that taste 50+ but that’s about it.

Wives tolerate it because they can enjoy it, too. There’s also some opacity because they don’t have the capacity/attention to get as into it (wine collecting is at least 98% male).

It can be enjoyed across generations.

some of these bourbon etc. guys are thinking of it as an investment and dont even open most of them.

but for the most part i think theyre the type who just have to try/buy/collect/trade everything

like the golfmos who have new stuff all the time and try every driver out there. and the guitar doods who have severe "GAS" same thing here

Adult Pokemon collecting.

The pudgy kid wearing horizontal striped tshirts and carrying around a haphazardly arranged binder of mid starter pack cards grows up into a rotund neckbeard with a cupboard full of middling burbon that’s been opened and one scrimped-for bottle of Pappy that exists just to be shown off to similar friends that will still be sitting untouched (just like his cock) when he dies of sudden cardiac arrest at 54.

The scrawny rich kid who mommy dressed in head-to-toe Tommy Hilfiger and had immaculate binders of complete sets and spillover binders from all his booster packs grows up to be a fuck face lawyer with a wine cellar. He’s touchy about his collection and prone to GO OFF like BlackRock’s Rob Kapito when questioned about the size of his collection (allegedly).
