I just think that getting high reviews now is insanely hard compared to before. Most games that have gotten crazy scores are legitimately some of the best games ever made. Elden ring, Mario odyssey, baldurs gate, tears of the kingdom etc. like just look at all the best games on metacritic. It’s no surprise that most of them are decade old games when ratings were a lot easier. A game like prime 3 or fusion coming out today would NOT get a higher score

Ok let’s unpack this. There’s more going on than the passage of time. Prime 1 is a “special” title because it arrived just when Nintendo needed a Cool, T-rated game to regain its traction with western fans. The halo effect protected the original trilogy but then it faded imo.
Anyway, back in like 2007-2012, games that had the right characteristics (such as non-linearity, like Prime 3) got a boost, and games that didnt got savaged. Many such cases:
Dragon’s Dogma (2012): 81
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013): 80
Final Fantasy XIII (2009): 83
Nier (2010): 67
Lost Odyssey (2008): 78
Resonance of Fate (2010): 74
Tales of Vesperia (2008): 81
Also — the State of Gaming is said to be Ruinous rn, which would explain a general decline in scores imo
