Surely you don't tip 15-20% on the bottle of wine right? They just bring you a bottle and open it - is that worth $25?

No you have to tip 50% on the after tax booze and food total, haven't you heard. Servers expect to make 150k/year for carrying plates of food and if you don't want to help them get there, don't eat out!

Lmao nothing upsets you more than people who work for a living. God forbid the people with few other options in life profit from waiting on you hand and foot. It would be a disaster if anybody made a penny from kissing your ass all day. But don't worry you'll never be one of them. You're better than that. You're above going to work.

This is so idiotic it’s barely worth replying to but why WAITERS of all professions in your opinion deserve $100k+ for carrying plates? The rest if the staff, the cooks, everyone else with a hard but low paying job? Nah you don’t care but high school dropout waiters are entitled to 100k for carrying plates. Weird guy

The only waiters I've ever heard of making that much are in Vegas or something working at some hyper stressful hotel scenario getting bosses around by celebrity chefs and shit. How much is 100k in NYC anyway? Do they have to get a second job? Do they work 60 hours a week or something to get to that number? You've never survived on 100k or less at any point in your entire life. Big of you to tell another person how much is 'enough' to live on.

Tipping is part of the price of admission in the US. We can philosophically debate its merits or wrongs but people just need to accept it isn't really voluntary and they aren't going to successfully wage a culture war to change it. You put 20% of your bill down unless there's an extraordinary fuck up and you go about your day.

Tipping isn’t expected at all in France, there’s a service charge built in to the price and they are paid a living wage. Only an American tourist would tip 10% unless the service was truly amazing. French people are not into tipping generally they leave nothing at all or a token pourboire.

Wouldn't you like to know for evidence gathering purposes. With your infinite leisure time you could get some opposition research done on me and then make some threads about it. That would be a good use of your time. Really hard to comprehend how all the money in the world wouldn't compel your wife to stay with you given how useful you are to society.

i ageee people should earn according to their value add and work. makes no sense a waiter should get a huge windfall just because a patron happened to order an expensive dinner.

btw what are your thoughts on steep inheritence and wealth taxes to ensure people dont receive generational wealth simply from being born to wealthy parents?

There has never been in the history of all of mankind someone who inherited generational wealth who didn't feel entitled to it.

When the French Revolution intercepted Louis XVI's letters to the other monarchies in Europe he essentially said I own everything in this country and the Revolution is insane. I'm taking it all back for myself at the soonest opportunity. I'm only playing along with these people to bide time but when the monarchy is restored I'm going to make sure everyone knows it's all my personal property.

It's kooky but people who receive life altering presents from their parents universally feel entitled to them. Even if they are rich and everyone else on Earth is poor. It's still theirs. Even if it's wealth of an entire nation. It's still their property in their estimation.

In light of that it's pretty easy to see why people who were literally starving to death cut all these people's heads off.

The thought of RSF claiming that someone — anyone — earns too much when he has never earned at all is just too ironic to ignore.

Fuckkkkk inheritance tax. Why should plate carrying HS drop outs make more $ than the people actually cooking your food which in many cases they do? They seem like the least valuable members of the restaurant team yet get the biggest payout. Also tipping was predicated on this fiction that they don’t earn a salary and need tips, now they are making at or above minimum wage which seems to be appropriate pay for the skills required to do their job. Not a very coherent argument to compare a family being able to pass down earned wealth to being extorted for charity by plate carriers. One is keeping what your ancestors earned the other is demanding strangers pay you a second income just because you want it.

RSF's Complete Guide to people who have enough already. Yes, single moms and heroin addicts, people with criminal records and legal immigrants they have all gone too far in their baller lifestyle. Unlike you who DESERVES the wealth of their ancestors. But plate carriers are scum. I'm glad we've identified the blue collar underbelly of society is getting a free ride. The cook doesn't make enough, the pilot who flies you around doesn't make enough, the concierge who checks you in and the maids who clean your room, all earning an honest wage all included in the fee! But a waiter is a leech on society. You know you've inspired me, in light of their largesse, I think perhaps we should simply kill them all. No value added, unlike RSF who is a huge boon to society sitting on his ass all day picking his nose. I'm glad you've identified the real assholes in this situation, the waiters. Scum of the Earth, basically.

Nothing I have ever had to do or would have to do to survive could possibly drive me as nuts as you logging in here with no friends, not having any respect, and the only people around you in life are there for your money including your ex wife who couldn't stand you. Meanwhile keep dunking on people with blue collar jobs it's a great look for you. You inherited daddy's money, never worked a day in your life, and it still eats at you that no one respects you or thinks your interesting and your only content creation is about consumption and spending money you didn't earn which you will defend to the grave as your divine right to possess. Keep talking shit though about people who have nothing and bust their asses how they're overpaid. It's a great look for you and your legacy. You know no one sensible would do this in real life on camera in person which is why you never hear about it. You never hear Joe Rogan say man blue collar workers make way too much, what a scam. No one would put their name on that take but, unbelievably, you do and you do it quasi anonymously on the internet so you will always have plausible deniability. Really big of you, and this will forever be your bort legacy, dunking on blue collar worker's for being overpaid. Guy who has literally never worked a day in his life and everyone knows it.

you were talking about why a waiter should get a bigger tip for a more expensive meal, now you're shifting the goalposts to other fields. a complete non-sequitur as no one disagrees that different jobs are emtitled to different compensation.

your first point was rooted in people should earn based on their work, but then you said that it's "not coherent" as applied to generational wealth, with no explanation why. it's completely conclusory and one doesn't have to think too hard about why you feel differently between the two.

how is bringing you a $100 bottle of wine any different than bringing you a $100 lobster plate that the kitchen prepares and the server only has to pick up and drop off with you anyway?

if anything the wine requires that whole performance show with pouring a little bit in and handing it to you to sniff and say "okay thats good"

just tip 15-20% on the total minus tax

you're fighting the hypo by comparing an expensive entree to a similarly expensive wine. the intent of the hypo seems to be to present a scenario where the wine is grossly disproportionate to the cost of the food.

imagine if you have some michelin restaurant with a $600 food bill ($300 tasting menu x 2 or whatever and you've already got the most expensive possible food), and you get a $3000 bottle of wine.

this case shows how retarded it is for you to attempt to fight the hypo.

if your answer in that case is still to tip 20%, fine. but dont fight the hypo.

thats not the "intent" of the hypo

the intent of the hypo is to ask why he has to tip for something that is so easy to do (bring wine which the restaurant already gets bottled) as opposed something he perceives as harder to do (bring food which the restuarant has to make)

hence the objection that it doesn't fucking matter bc the server does the same amt of work

your explanation also makes zero sense becuase there is nothing about drinks that warrants tipping less except for the fact that the restaurant doesn't have to prepare it like they do food

the intent of the hypo is obviously to address a disproportionately high wine bill relatively to the food cost, my man.

and this is a perfectly reasonable hypo to ask, especially in fancy restaurants where someone may have a 5 figure wine bill and the sky's the limit in terms of the wine bill and there's only so much you can possibly spend on food.

Tipping is stupid and unless you plan to frequent the restaurant the credited answer is $10 so you dont have to fist fight the waiter on your way out but not one cent more. If you do plan to frequent the place again then you have to tip at least 15% of the total.

Assuming that's before tax and service was average, $8 plus 15% of whatever that wine would have cost at the nearest nigger liquor store.

If you tip any differently for wine just don't order it. What do you care if you add 20% for wine if you already overpaid by 300% for it? More important I've seen restaurants charge me automatic 18% and then offer me an option to add another 15 or 20 or 25 lol. Or how about after I signed the check they fraudulently charged my cc for double the amount. I actually called bank to cancel a restaurant bill after I got double charged a second time (first time I came in and corrected them in person).

Cr. A $100 bottle of wine at a restaurant is a $20 bottle of wine at the grocery store. The restaurant patron willingly pays this absurd upcharge under the implicit agreement that he's doing so for the pleasure of enjoying a time out. Now imagine being OK with tipping the establishment $80 but thinking that a waiter doesn't deserve $20. You've already tipped some rich asshole 4x that amount. And what was the 'skill' the owner had? Being rich and running a business?

But I agree with you fraud is wrong. And some waiters steal people's credit cards. Restaurants that double charge people are likely failing as a business and falling behind. Waiters who steal should be prosecuted.

I'm pretty sure it's the waiters double charging, not the owner(or just charging another person's bill). And yes I'm pretty sure I've had Cc info stolen exclusively at restaurants(had bank call me and cancel after 300$ doordash charges). I don't expect anybody who works as a waiter more than 1 summer to be a "good person". Right now anybody who honestly makes a living off "tips" is on onlyfans.

I used to go somewhere that started adding a service charge plus a health and wellness charge onto all the bills. After the first couple times I finally noticed I was paying $30 for a gristly Reuben and looked into it further. I stopped going there.

Also make sure the suggested tips aren’t after tax. That’s another of their tricks.

Most restaurants add tips after tax in usa, that's standard. What's important is not to give 1 extra cent if they included the 18% tip into your bill and called it "service charge" and then call for "tip". I've actually had them argue with me after I tell them you got your tip faggot.

I'm not rewarding a waiter or restaurant for the fact that blue cities and states run their government finances like dogshit and need to charge 40% tax rate on all economic activity. no fucking way.

normal 15-20% on the food, then a separate arrangement on the wine; can't imagine the wine tip being more than the food service tip though -- in fact, shouldn't it be the owner who tips the waiter for upselling an expensive bottle?

(from discussion on why parties of 6 are charged an auto-gratuity)

"And I’ve explained ad nauseam on this blog why “auto-grats” are slapped on to parties of six or more. Large parties eat slower than tables with two for four customers.

*** The way waiters and restaurants make their money is by “turning and burning” tables. I can make a lot more money serving several two-tops that take 1.5 hours to eat than getting my section clogged up with an eight-top that lingers over coffee until the busboys start swabbing the floors with bleach. (That’s restaurant speak for, “It’s time for you to go.”) ***

And if you’ve tied up my section the entire night and leave me a bad tip? Well then I’ve worked for nothing. Auto-grats are designed to protect waiters from cheap tippers like you, Dave."

it seems to me that eating and ordering quickly to facilitate a quicker table turn should count as part of the tip
