i complained about this nonstop as a kid and i was always told in response that homework was necessary to "help reinforce what you learn in class"
i think at some point everyone realized this was flame because the dumb kids never learn anything regardless and the smart kids learn everything by osmosis anyway

it's all a product of bureaucracy and stupid women.
the kind of work that you could do in front of a tv (eg math) is assigned just to prove that tasks are being assigned and completed, for stupid parents who need to be shown that their kids are "doing something" and bureaucrats who rely on test scores etc to win funding and elections. it has nothing to do with real education, and parents and bureaucrats are happy to enforce it because they do not understand what education means (and most people in the public school system are hopeless anyways, so they might as well learn to be productive). but at least it serves a practical purpose in serving as a kind of IQ test and sorting mechanism to identify intellectually gifted children. and from there you can separate out the intelligent kids and hopefully give them something a little better, if you're a wise enough parent.
the time-consuming busy work "projects" are the worst though because they do not even accomplish this, they are simply the product of tyrannical women indulging their desire for power and influence over the youth, and affirming their frivolity and vanity as having social and moral value. thus dei macaroni art projects about billy collins become "the foundation of democracy" or some gay shit.

goyims you're getting it all twisted, like one of bubbe's home-made pretzels
the industrialized us school system is not about EDUCATION
it's about preparing you for a life of COMPLIANCE and top-down mandated DISCIPLINE. exercises like these are not to EDIFY or ENRICH you but to BREAK your SPIRIT and leave you as fertile soil for prospective employers to shape into either an economic cog or weapon of commerce

Think of how many thousands (literally thousands) of prime boyhood hours were wasted on senseless homework, times millions and millions of American boys.
Huge amounts of homework from 2nd through 12th grade was a big part of the reason that I, and many, many other boys disliked school. (My wife, and many girls who liked getting gold star stickers from teachers, of course, loved it and ate it up.)
For most of the day, you had to sit still, copy things off the board, pay attention, and not joke around with your friends. There would be a few fun moments--recess, PE, a science project, learning something new in math or history. But most of the day was rote and boring. Almost excruciatingly so, at timess. Then, mercifully, you'd be released at 3:00. Except you weren't really released. The school's tentacles invaded your home.
You needed to read some textbooks, fill out worksheets, do math problems, read some generally unexceting book for English (sometimes we read interesting books), and work on a take-home essay. Thirty minutes per class per night times six classes was three hours of homework each and every night. And thirty minutes per class was not much by the standards of the day. And there were "projects" on top of that and quizes and tests to study for.
So much of the homework was boring busy work. You didn't learn anything from filling in blanks on a worksheet, but that was the assignment. You had to do 30 minutes of math problems. If you "got" it after the first 10 minutes, you were good to go and the last 20 minutes were a waste. And if you didn't get it after the first 10 minutes, you weren't going to after the next 20.
The one thing you can say for all that homework is that it sure prepared you for a career in biglaw.

Childhood education is deeply adrift.
The most fundamental problem - and its nothing but problems - is that no one can say what it is for.
Its de facto purpose is to warehouse kids in a meaningless way, so both of their parents can do meaningless work.
AI will most certainly eliminate the parents' jobs. This will not reunite the family, though, because AI will likely be put in charge of the kids. What will it train them for, if not to take over the parents' former jobs? Who the fuck knows....
We are facing a philosophical dilemma that we have not faced for millennia. I don't see any answers around
Most dystopian possibility is that our new "role" is to screen-stare, so the purpose of childhood education is to train us to do so, beating out of our personalities anything that rebels against screens.

Remember the "show your work" prealgebra spinsters who wouldn't give you credit unless you rotely dissected 2x + 13 = 17?
That was really the beginning of hating homework

There was definitely way too much homework then, in large part because there was zero consideration for how much other teachers might be assigning. If I'm taking 6 classes and each one gives me 30 minutes of homework, that's 3 hours of already limited after-school time. There was eventually more of an awareness that it should just be 10-15 minutes of work per class to reinforce the learning and help keep it moving efficiently.
But now it's going too far the other way where there's NO homework. Learning is much slower overall when they don't get the extra practice in because that all ends up being done in class, and they don't develop a good work ethic. It's part of the gentle/permissive parenting trend.

My Big State U math dept rolled out some new homework program my freshman year where we would get weekly online assignments for engineering calculus that took 15+ hrs. Often the questions were to take the derivative of some MASSIVE equation that was far more complicated and messy than something they'd put on a test, and you needed to type your 75 character answer into a tiny box that you could only highlight scroll through, and if a single fraction was misspaced (the questions had their numbers randomized so we couldn't copy each other and thus wouldn't simplify themselves as you solved them like human-made problems often do) the portal gave you a fat WRONG response and you could spend the next 30min figuring out what you fucked up. Oftentimes some part of a fraction wasn't wrapped within the quadruple nested parentheses square root abomination. Meanwhile the rest of my dorm majoring in english or business was nonstop fucking & sucking and I'd often just give up and join them.

I'm in the thick of this shit. math and grammar exercises are fine and lead to improved retention of the material ime.
by contrast 90% of the "fun" "creative" long-term projects are a pointless and vapid slog, utterly demoralizing. these are assigned because the *teachers* get bored, not the students, who almost all hate them and get little if anything out of them.

i got my ass kicked 1l. i had no idea what "studying" was.

In 8th grade math we were assigned a huge end of year project for some reason that had to use math principles, kids spent weeks building elaborate contraptions and poster boards etc. You could tell most of them had their parents help
The day it was due I took 2 paper food trays from the lunch room and taped them together with a fork for the mast (One was the boat & one was the sail) and when I brought it up to the teacher he threw it in the trash all pissed off. What do i care i still "graduated". What a farce

def lots of hw, but how else would you learn? class time is basically babysitting, or if they actually teach, they have to go slow for the dumb kids. you have to go home and learn the stuff yourself.
take math for instance, someone can show you how to do something, but until you've done it by yourself, you haven't really understood/learned it.
