Before 1990 no NBA player had ever made more than $4M in a year (in NBA salary). Before 1979, no NBA player had even made a million.

And yet in the 80s and 90s and even into the 00s, people cared a lot more about the NBA than they do now.

Like everything else in the 80s and 90s, culture was universal. It applies to everything.

It's weird living in a post-universal (nationally, at least) culture. Like, if you were waiting for the subway in 1999, you could talk to any other guy on the platform, of any age, about whether the Yankees would win the pennant. Now, I'd be surprised if even half of the guys on a subway platform even know what a "pennant" is.

I used to think it was a Pendant, like those you attain in Zelda: A Link to the Past.

And they were way underpaid. It pisses people off but the reality is that these talents are rare, especially for superstars. They deserve to capture the lion’s share of the profit the teams and leagues generate. Why should a bunch of fat ass owners and execs take everything. Anyone could do their job.

And those thousands of other people are easily replaceable. Far more easily replaced than the players, especially the superstars. Regular folk got pissed off at the players' strikes in the 90's but the players were 100% correct. They deserve the lion's share of profit generated by the league.

The world (US specifically) has gotten a lot richer, and that extra disposable income is heavily influenced by sports ball
