anyone who has had to work with poors and even the working poor knows that most of them aren't functionally literate and even those that are are incapable of reading and processing written information like people everyone here would consider dumb

the written word robbed them of oral culture and in its place we have an entire society built around tasks they can't perform leaving them permanently stressed and bewildered

try sitting down with some poor helping her navigate some multipage document, they express this stress generally by being either completely subservient or rude and aggressive, but stupid people are generally angry and have poor impulse control so this shouldn't be surprising

A program I worked for wisely didn't require any reading or paperwork from clients. Generally Reptiles are against this because we want to shame people or make getting gibs difficult, but if you're actually interested in helping the vulnerable in some small, practical ways doing it like that is more efficient for everyone involved and thus better.

180 & relevant Coomaraswamy essay, which I think about whenever this comes to mind: http://www.worldwisdom.com/public/viewpdf/default.aspx?article-title=The_Bugbear_of_Literacy_by_Ananda_Coomaraswamy.pdf

The anthropologist Paul Radin points out that the distortion in our whole psychic life and in our whole apperception of the exter nal realities produced by the invention of the alphabet, the whole tendency of which has been to elevate thought and thinking to the rank of the exclusive proof of all verities, never occurred among primitive peoples, adding that it must be explicitly recognized that in temperament and in capacity for logical and symbolical thought, there is no difference between civilized and primitive man, and as to progress, that none in ethnology will ever be achieved until scholars rid themselves, once and for all, of the curi ous notion that everything possesses an evolutionary history; until they realize that certain ideas and certain concepts are as ultimate for man as his physical constitution. The distinction of peoples in a state of nature from civilized peoples can no longer be maintained.

it's true that most poors & dumbs are uncurious and I'd say some of that is IQ, some of that is conditioning, some of that is genetic/cultural, but there are very curious persons who aren't necessarily very verbal and there's no outlet for them to have access to learning any more so they generally eat up the closest thing to "informative" programming that's offered to them by TV, Ancient Aliens and stuff like that. (No one thinks to aim actual historical programming in a fashion that would capture their eyes, but Ancient Aliens is actually really hook-laden.)

anyhow it's not even clear that literacy is as much of an aid to philosophical abstraction as we tend to assume

formal logic can't exist pre-literacy but its actual utility to philosophy is still an open question (considering that analytic philosophy is basically worming its way back to ancient thinkers in the past couple decades)

and in any case the problem isn't literacy, it's presuming your society on it when most persons are not capable of even superficial literacy, much less the sort of thing we meant when we called men literate centuries ago (read the Coomaraswamy essay brother)

this OP is supremely CR, my feelings exactly. smart people dont understand how STRESSFUL and SCARY the modern world is for smaller brained people. there is an expectation for everyone to stay up to date on everything happening around them and to understand the complexities of the world in depth, but normal people don't have the physiological capability to do this, and so they end up just feeling lost and frightened and confused

this is one of the reasons why mainstream media brainwash and gaslighting is so effective. many normies *know* that they're not getting the real story from the media, but they don't know where else to turn. how could they ever tell who is telling them the truth and who is lying to them?

you joke, but i know some people like this, and then they lost all their money because they wouldn't listen to my advice to sell while it was high. their rationale included:

"it's not technically worth anything anyway" (????)

"i might as well just hold onto it until the end, since if i sell now i would just be losing money" (jfc)

"once it gets low enough, it has to start going back up again"

crypto ended up just being yet another resource-extracting scam on dumb people. i don't even know why it's legal for people under 120 IQ to purchase investment products. well, i know why, but....yeah

I wasn't joking, crypto investing is one of many examples of certain people suffering fundamental cognitive confusion caused by modernity. And I'm bullish on BTC long-term but most people can't handle it in the short run.

In a way, the SEC does try to prevent people with less than 120 IQ from investing in anything other than vanilla investments via things like accredited investor requirements and stringent regulations on brokers. Crypto happens to be unregulated and decentralized so normies get the chance to go buckwild.

yeah but if you get a 150 on the LSAT you are still waaayyy too dumb to be worrying about abstractions or to be entrusted with societal power and responsibility based on the manipulation of abstractions to reach conclusions about the world and extrapolating the future based on those conclusions

that's the whole point of this thread. somebody who gets a 150 on the LSAT has no way of knowing or understanding this. if they did, they'd be getting a lot better than 150 on the LSAT

yeah, the point is "literacy" in terms of basic functional literacy is only achievable by a minority, and actual literacy/abstract thought is a tiny minority of that minority

premising society on everyone being the former is insane, but we manage to do it on the latter as well

some truth to that, but the real purpose of forcing education on everyone is to mold young minds with the propaganda of the elite

Credited, Scumbags are always confused and angry when they have to deal with things now. The world is too complicated. Just look at cars, like 20 years ago you just needed “Scumbag know how” to fix one, now it’s impossible with all the computers and shit.

The shit modern world has on the other hand created a fairly literate population of Redditor-type Losers who can write fairly well (Reddit poasts usually have good spelling/grammar/etc.) but are complete NPCs with their views. Even when the modern shit world pumps out people smart enough to read and write, they are too dumb to think. Loser Clique is expert at not seeing the forest for the trees.

Excellent post, number 14.

Yeah I mean it seems like with boomers the dumb ones write like idiots or in all caps but there really are a lot of “educated” millennials who can poast coherently but are dumb as hell. Reddit is a haven for them.
