The British, in decline after the war, were too poor to have a space program of their own so all of their engineering brainpower went into audio engineering at the time and that's how they made all those great-sounding records which were so superior to American stuff.

There is a whole genre of dramatic 1970s Rock photography showing Brit engineers sitting behind enormous British-made Neve recording consoles which seemed like a direct, competitive response to the Life magazine NASA 'Mission Control' photographs of the period.

Also the great iconic triumph of British sound engineering references the moon landing directly ('Darkside of the Moon').

It was a matter of national pride. They had a real hangup about the 'yanks' having outshone them.

The Alan Parsons Project was actually supposed to be their moon mission. Parsons trained for years as an astronaut before the project drastically shifted focus in the mid-70s.
