$1.9 million with an 8% return, with no additional principal added, will be $8.8 million in 20 years. that return rate might be overly aggressive given that you should be extremely cautious when running these numbers, but i think it's realistic given that the s&p has returned like 10% or more over the last 30 years.

at a minimum, we will continue maxing out retirement accounts for the next 5 years. assuming we do that and then cut off all retirement savings, we'll have just over $10m in 20 years.

i haven't stopped saving yet. between contributions and gains last year, the accounts went up approx 200k.

so assuming returns are similar to last year, we will hit 2 mil if not by the end of the year, early next year. i also have an equity payout coming in feb. that should be more than $150k after taxes are withheld.

over the course of the next few months, how much in “savings” are you planning to contribute specifically to the tax-advantaged retirement accounts you referenced above and that are the explicit topic of this thread?

710k isn't really "around" a million. It's closer to half a million. but it's still an impressive amount to have in your 401k, unless you're like 50.

i was conflating the 401k balance with the roth balance. those two added together are $821k. Wife's total adding both accounts is $932k, so the total is $1.7 mil. then we have another ~$80k in taxable index funds and $150k in crypto.

45 years old, so this may seem unimpressive, but our total net worth 10 years ago was about 400k. i got a late start saving.

Vanguard, in its How America Saves 2024 report (based on 2023 data), found that plan participants between the ages of 45 and 54 had an average 401(k) balance of $168,646, with a median balance of $60,763. Those in their late 50s to early 60s had somewhat higher balances, with an average of $244,750 and a median account size of $87,571.

What's surprising about xo posters being 3-4 SDs above average?

simply having a 401k in the first place puts you well above the average person. age range of most xo poas is probably right in that 45 to 54 bracket.

the AVERAGE (not median) being $168,646, I suppose it is not at all surprising that xo poas have multi-million dollar balances. I mean how could they not haha. it's elementary Watson.
