No. After 6 months you'll be used to it and it will be just as if you never moved.

That said, it makes sense to pay more change location to somewhere with better schools (ie. more White) and/or with a better commute or otherwise more convenient location.

My buddy has a $1.5-1.75mm house in a decently nice part of Atlanta. Not the nicest in the area by a long shot, but definitely solid. He says that a couple times a year shit goes wrong that costs $5-10k, and recently one that he was quoted 50k to fix

you can buy investment real estate that is lower maintenance and with higher returns but you’re not tied to it. after all, over 30 years your needs are gonna vary wildly so you usually end up with too much house or not enough

meanwhile you can rent what you want and maintenance and all that is someone else’s problem

That can cover a huge range of houses, from 3000 sq ft in the most desirable areas to an 8000 sq ft aging mansion.

But assuming he bought something reasonable, either the house is a complete piece of shit or the contractors see him as an easy mark or you're exagerrating.

The only shit he is going to spend that much on is AC units, plumbing, and foundation, so what is he spending so much on in later years after all that is fixed? Flooding the house and replacing the floor on an annual basis?

Enjoy your overgrown yard of weeds and fallen trees, full of ticks, mosquitos and snakes. Occasionally it will catch fire and burn down your house. Should be awesome!

If you live very far north in a mature forest then I retract. But in 95% of America you cannot let your property go and expect good results.

No that's not a good idea. You will get snakes, centipedes, and scorpions all over the place.

There is a back section of my yard that is behind some hedges and I left it alone for a little over a year after I bought the house (it was in good shape when I bought). Lots of fallen tree limbs, weeds and vines growing into the fallen tree limbs making them difficult to get rid of, places with weeds 3-4 feet high. A complete shitshow. Things can get out of hand very quickly in springtime.

I have heard of Boomers buying up luxurious properties, doing full renos, full landscaping upgrades, full decorating jobs, etc. and then selling for a profit in really booming luxury markets like Palm Beach. Perhaps those deals are worth it, but you've gotta have a lot of money to play and you're constantly spending cash and there's tons of risk.

For basically everyone else, purchasing a single family home and going all in on luxury is not going to be a great decision financially. It could work out, but it probably will not. So if you go for luxury, you better damn love where you live, what features you have in your big house, and tons of money to pay for it.

The safest option is always to buy and live in the least amount of house that you need. The things that are important are: safety, enough space, good location. Like someone else said, the best convenience is ease of commute to your work/school/life activities/etc. That's true.

With bigger houses come bigger expenses and often times the "luxury" of having a house isn't worth it. With the proliferation of all of these private clubs, for $400/mo you can get a pool/spa/gym/sports courts/etc. that someone else maintains for you and just live somewhere convenient. So, there's a cheaper way to LUXEMAX if that's what you're into.

Now, if you have so much money that you don't know what to do with it, then why not go all out on some luxuries. I mean, what else are you going to do with the money? But unless you feel rich, you should watch this expense because if it gets out of hand, you can wind up poor and broke and miserable at the drop of a hat.

I moved to a bigger house for a variety of reasons—mainly it was a better neighborhood, my wife got a new job close by, kids’ schools, more space, little bit newer construction.

The house is massively more expensive and causes me tons of stress though. It wouldn’t have been worth it at all if I was just considering the finances of it—and I absolutely hated my old house.

Depends on what you mean by “luxurious.”

If it means more gizmos and automated crap, then no it’s absolutely not worth it.

If it means a more sound structure, bigger rooms, bigger windows, and nice views, then it’s definitely worth it (depending on the premium you pay).

The only thing that matters is location and maybe the view. Living on a park and walking there every day instead of a suburb where you need to drive, matters. Shorter commute, better neighbors, all that matters. Moving to FL was the best move we ever made. Well worth it.

More interior space - probably not worth it. Unless yoh're super cramped, likely won't matter. Bigger rooms are epically stupid.

Luxe finishes - you can get that for an existing home, and do it your way, and not double or triple your interest rates.

how much do lux finishes cost for 1800 square foot home though - sounds like a lot of work and money
