Rome got lucky when an old trireme washed up on the beach. If that had never happened, we probably would have no record of Rome's existence.

At the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, England got lucky one of its commanders could speak French fluently enough to fool some French seamen. Otherwise the Seven Years War would have got won by France. Also the USA would probably never exist.
