Public universities rely on those more than private ones AFAICT. Places like UNC Chapel Hill and UC Berkeley stand out in certain sectors, and the Institute for Social Research at University of Michigan has tie-ups with about 50 Federal agencies.

CR. many of the LACs don't receive too much in fed grants. they're concentrated in Ivies and flagship state universities.

Eisenhower's "military-industrial complex" is more like the military-industrial-university complex." and it has failed the public massively.

It started with Abraham Lincoln giving a land grant to MIT in exchange for developing artillery. There's no way MIT qualifies as a land grant university.

way back when, prestigious universities taught Latin, Greek, and Theology, while the new land grant schools taught ag, engineering, and applied knowledge.

i guess that if i had to put MIT into one category or the other i'd say it was more of the land grant style.

All of that shit could have been done at Harvard. The land grant universities are supposed to do something for the state, and Massachusetts already had an elite private university. Cornell is the only other private land grant university I'm aware of and they are big in agriculture.
