weren't the hawks there expecting to be a kiev in like a couple of months? seems like both sides have been frozen within a hundred kilometers for years now. little 'victories' for each side every now and then but no huge land gains outside of the initial assault.

they took over a fair chunk of territory from ukraine but if you told russians in the beginning of 2022 that three years later they would have taken most of those eastern pro russian provinces but wouldn't even be to kharkiv would they have thought this was worth it?

I'm sure they are disappointed with the military progress, but, at the same time, Putin is pumping a massive amount of money into the war economy which has revitalized rural areas in particular. So a lot of people feel better off economically.

The problem is that Russia is eating its economic seed corn to pay for this stimulus, and that will be felt eventually.

Not really. Most think it did more harm than good. But recent polling shows a majority believe it’s progressing well now. The vast majority support the war. Support is strongest among olds who get their news’s from TV. The glimmer of hope is that the number of people who want a deal now is growing. It’s a clear majority now.

Levada Center is pretty much the only source for independent public opinion polling in the country.

Olds who get their news from state TV and who have absolutely nothing at stake and probably more than a little resentment that they had to live through USSR and youngs did not. Just do kill a quarter of a million of your young men in a country already in population collapse.

Russians exist to be slaves. They are similar to MAGAs in that they will always believe and do what they are instructed to believe and do.

It took the US nearly 4 years to defeat Japan. Even after Midway it took years.
