Date: June 27th, 2025 12:13 PM Author: insane walnut market of course, part of it is "they don't know how to do it anymore," but the more important piece is that the "they" changed. in the past the industry was nepotistic, but I'd say starting around 20-25 years ago, hires were either 1) nepotism, or 2) DEI/minority hires, whereas before that it was a mix of nepotism and actual talent.
you see this in writers rooms - 80% of them are made up of obvious DEI hires, and the other 20% is obviously people with connections who may be, but probably aren't due to the rarity of real skill, talented.
I'm most clued into the publishing industry, where a similar thing happened around 25-30 years ago, and now you see what a pipeline issue looks like after it has matured - no ability to sell books outside of political and celebrity memoirs. this has led to a perpetually shrinking workforce, wages that stagnated at mid-2000's level ($45-50k in NYC), and a smaller and smaller number of unit sales and shrinking readership |

Entertainment and media more generally was one of the massive successes of boomers mid-careers that made them all wealthy and famous. It’s impossible for that same group of people to accept the fact that all the shit they built ie cable, capeshit, animated movies with celeb voices (other than pre-existing/pre-internet IP), romantic comedies, etc. are all boring as shit to most people and 90+% of viewers under 45. And the would be tech disruptors are not motivated because the juice isn’t worth the squeeze relative to their core businesses, so they’re basically just sitting on these assets and not doing anything to make them better.
