the REAL reason Americans eat sweet corn as a staple is really fucking sad

Date: January 5th, 2026 3:21 PM Author: Tan home Indians never grew sweet corn as a staple. They considered it an oddity that was only used on ceremonial occasions to make sweets. They ate hundreds of varieties of maize and only a few were sweet corn.
The problem is that by the time Europeans arrived here, they were already hooked on sugar from Asia. They kept asking these American Indians "what's good to eat around here" and Indians kept giving them all this maize, but it never worked. The Europeans never said "oh thank you, this is great" until some tribe noticed their sugar addiction and offered them some sweet corn. It was at that point that Europeans finally came to love maize, and now it's ILLEGAL to use other varieties of maize for anything but animal feed and home decor |

Interesting fact: Indians didn't have sugar or even honey. They had something like honey but it more of a liquid you drank and it wasn't very sweet. Mayans used cocoa beans as currency but they ate and drank all their chocolate with no sugar |

That's why 100% of our tortillas taste like dogshit. We had to invent flour tortillas to compensate for the shittiness of our corn tortillas, which crumble and fall apart as soon as they touch moisture. |
