Very likely will get promoted tomorrow, but the job will suck. What can I do?

Date: January 25th, 2026 12:56 PM Author: chest-beating jap Current job (engineering middle management) already sucks -- I regularly have 6+ meetings a day. Turns out I hate meetings a lot more than codecucking. Both are still terrible.
I'm expecting to get promoted to the next level of middle management tomorrow. Nice title bump and a $20k+ raise, but my meeting load will go up from very miserable to simply intolerable.
The promotion is due to the current person in the new role quitting. Pretty sure she was burned out from the endless meetings. She quit without a new job lined up, which is an indication of how badly she wanted out. That's why I'm not particularly excited about getting the role.
So, if I do get a promotion (98% certain I will), how can I push back against the ridiculous meeting load and not burn out? This isn't the first time I've seen someone burn out in a similar role at my company.

Date: January 25th, 2026 4:08 PM Author: vigorous overrated dopamine i've thought about this recently and i would politely decline. it's just not worth it. i have enough money saved, i'm good at what i do, and i would strongly prefer to keep doing it at my current pay rate than take the risk. unless there is truly life altering money involved, it's all flame, just coast. with that in mind, be straight up with them that the meeting load is a deal breaker and see what they say. you have to be willing to walk away. but whatever they say is probably bullshit, they need someone in that spot and once you're in you're stuck. Both teams are partnering with at least two other engineering teams, so there are meetings to coordinate work with the partner teams. And meetings with stakeholders. Plus Agile Scrotum meetings. Date: January 25th, 2026 6:17 PM Author: Buff Cuckold Pocket Flask Why can't rising through the ranks spare you from meetings rather than cause more meetings insofar as you can decline meetings, delegate others to take the meetings for you, delegate others to run the meetings for you; do "where are we on this" emails instead of meetings; double or triple book yourself for meetings and skip one of them/split time between them, and just not show up?
If you're rising through the ranks and not doing all of the above, you're doing it wrong. And doing the above doesn't have to be bad (avoiding work). It can be positive (look how busy he is; look how he empowers his teams). |
