parents are redoing their estate planning and updating their revocable trust. if i die, would it make sense for my wife to be the backup trustee? should they trust her to manage the trust on behalf of our kids' interest?

yes, and it's gonna be 50/50, but:
1) they need a backup trustee in case both of us are dead before they die, and
2) even if the assets are split up 50/50 into sub-trusts, someone would need to be the trustee of my subtrust in case i die and the same for my brother's subtrust if he dies
