It’s all connected! Oh, what a twist!
Growing up, I really liked every 007 movie on the first viewing. After a spell, I could revisit many of them and see they were mediocre after all. Spectre was the first one where I said, “That sucked”, on the way out

The problem with the Bond movies is that the stories got too "big." Casino Royale is amazing because its scale is relatively small. Bond is trying to neutralize a banker, not restructure an entire system / bring down an over-the-top ridiculous crime syndicate and cartoon villain. The approach they took with Craig as Bond in Casino Royale doesn't suit itself to the more zany / cartoonish elements of the later films. And when those films try and be self-serious, it just comes off poorly.
At least with the Brosnan films, you can sort of say "well yeah this is camp and Brosnan gets his fuck on while beating a cartoon villain." The tone fits the actor and so forth.
I've started to read the classic books and they are a cut above the movies. Fleming would've been a poaster.

QOS tried to make BOLIVIA into its 'exotic locale,' but bolivia is a shithole with no romance in its borders at all. along with the moralizing plotline about water rights or whatever the fuck, it just seemed a bit dry and grim.
