I didn't listen to the interview, but I read some excerpts elsewhere. As I recall, he blamed himself for the catastrophe to a large degree. He speculated that the reason Rob Hall tried to guide several clients to the summit late in the day (long after the designated "turn around" time) was because Hall was worried that his company would look bad if his clients didn't make it to the top while clients from a rival company did. Since Krakauer was a reporter for Outside, it was especially important that he didn't look bad. Krakauer thought that Hall took stupid risks that he wouldn't normally take because he was worried that Krakauer would make him look bad in his writeup.

Ty, ty. I’d missed this and will be sure to give it a listen.

What’s XO consensus on Krakauer? Certified badass or effete pretender or mere outside observer, occasionally dabbling in actual adventure?
