They did a reasonable job of balancing, e.g., cosmopolitan elites talking about how cool it was that Kabul had jazz clubs in the 60's with recognition that most of the country was rural, poor, and religious. One of the most interesting interview subjects is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulbuddin_Hekmatyar, an Islamist who was PM in the 90's.
