Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending NATO-style security guarantees to Qatar, including retaliatory military action.
It comes after Israel launches airstrikes on the Islamic country's capital, Doha, last month to target Hamas leaders. The strike failed, killing a Qatari security officer, and sparked international outrage.
Trump's order offers some of the strongest security guarantees possible to a non-NATO member, signaling a seismic shift in America's foreign policy in the Middle East.
It states: 'The United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States.
'In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures - including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military - to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar.'
Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday apologized to Qatar for the attack in a phone call while sitting with President Trump in the Oval Office. |
