“I’m not going to vote to borrow $1.2 trillion and give everybody a check,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R., La.). “And once the president thinks about that, and they start crafting the legislation and see the impact on the bond market and interest rates and our deficits, I don’t think they’ll end up wanting to do that.”

Asked about the Trump proposal, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) gave reporters a thumbs down. Pressed for the reason, she said, “let’s start with $40 trillion,” a reference to one measure of the size of the federal debt.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R., La.), who lost his re-election bid earlier this year, slammed the proposal in an interview at a Semafor event, saying that Republicans would oppose such payments under a Democratic administration.

“If Joe Biden suggested a $5,000 check, without apparent pay-fors, Republicans and conservatives would say, ‘You gotta be kidding me.’”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R., S.D.) said he saw the idea as a way of highlighting the contrast between Republicans and Democrats but wasn’t committed to the proposal, saying Monday that “there will be discussions around that subject” among Senate Republicans.
