I did I lot of studying on Udacity and Lynda.com, and Front End Masters has been great for actually understanding how the javascript compiler/interpreter works.
It can be frustrating, so for a lot of stuff I'll just google and stack overflow blindly until something works. Over time the gaps in knowledge fill in over time. It probably helps that I've read webdev forums for the past two years, so I have a better theoretical than practical understanding of a lot of current best practices. It helps when you already know where to look?

The first generation of frameworks only dealt with the pain of supporting multiple browsers, but didn't make it much easier to build applications. Second generation came along and make applications less painful to write, but each had their own flaws. Started with Udacity + Front End Masters + Treehouse and then just started building small web sites. I built up a decent enough portfolio of small projects, used that to get a job and learned a ton at work.
I'm making around 110, three years in. |
