You check your phone beside you in the dark. Sure enough. It's an emergency, or maybe not, but you assume that it is because your mind is racing and you won't be able to go to sleep anyway. You go into the office in your house and you start hammering away at the keys on your laptop. Those emails to the clients won't write themselves! Who needs a holiday you think to yourself! I got this. I am the master of my universe. I am a good lawyer, goddamnit. Always responsive! Always on call! As you are hammering away, you realize you made a mistake and you have to recall an email message, you fire off another missive to the client about how you are seeking out resolution "immediately." Before you can hit send though, the VPN connection goes out and you have to reboot. Then your laptop needs updates. You decide to reboot and shower while you are getting back to where you left off. After the shower you finally get the message out. The fire drill should be done for the day! You still can't sleep though. Even though the emails are down for now. You check the turkey and its dry brine. It still looks kind of frozen. You empty the dishwasher. You curse your wife for putting the knives in there. HANDWASHING ONLY WITH THE SHARP KNIVES!!! The dishes are done so you check the laundry. There's a lot to fold. You make coffee. You fold the laundry. There's no quieting the agitation in your soul though. You calculate your net worth and that leaves you depressed. You wonder if the trash people will be around today to empty the bins and you decide to go put your trash out by the street just in case (knowing full well that they will never come). As you come in from the cold you pour some coffee and you start to poast. You wonder why you can no longer feel anything remotely resembling joy and you seek out the understanding of your new friends, all of whom hide behind monikers on the internet. Einfuehlung never comes. |
