Why do republicans seem so willfully ignorant of facts?

Identity Over Information: Modern U.S. politics has become deeply identity-based, not just issue-based. For many Republicans, being conservative is tied to who they are — their community, religion, culture, and sense of patriotism. When facts challenge that identity (for example, about climate change, vaccines, or systemic racism), it can feel like an attack on their group rather than a data dispute. People instinctively defend their identity over adjusting their beliefs — it’s a universal human bias called motivated reasoning.
Media Ecosystem Reinforcement: Conservative media — especially outlets like Fox News, talk radio, and certain online platforms — have created parallel information ecosystems that emphasize partisan loyalty and skepticism toward mainstream institutions (academia, government, science, journalism). This reinforces existing beliefs and inoculates audiences against outside information. Once that feedback loop is in place, facts that contradict the narrative get framed as “liberal propaganda.”
Distrust of Institutions: Since at least the 1970s, conservative leaders have built political capital by attacking elites and experts — from the “liberal media” to the “deep state” to universities. Over time, this cultivated a cultural stance of distrust toward authority and expertise itself. So even when accurate information is available, it’s discounted if it comes from distrusted sources (scientists, journalists, bureaucrats).

there's ignorant on both sides and across all spectrums.
right now, though, with media and universities having lurched left, the cons are far more interested in fact and debate and the libs are far more interested in proclaiming orthodoxies.
