The problem is everyone feels entitled to live in the best neighborhoods in high demand cities and want all their kids to get their own bedroom and bathroom. Expectations have grown out of control. People used to be happy with a simple 2 bedroom 1 bathroom shitbox. Plenty of these houses exist and are affordable but people feel entitled to modern luxuries that cost a ton of money.

ARE they affordable though? most proles can't afford a ~$300Kish house at 6% interest afaik. anything lower than that and you're getting into Raymond territory with No Basement and a Fake Chimney and it is zoned Commercial for some reason.

When we were house shopping a few years back, there was basically no single family inventory below 500k Minus foreclosures and estate sales. Anything right around the threshold would end up in a weird bidding war and usually bought up by an investor

"just buy in Indiana" is disingenuous, intellectually dishonest even. where the biggest employer is Walmart or something. and remote workers are going to have Middle Class sensibilities and won't be comfortable around Scum, and the Scum doesn't want them there "driving up home prices" anyway.

Also since COVID all of these dumps have an office full of idiots where they try and trick saps like you into moving there for like $2,000 in gibs. They can't even pay people to live there.

As a kid, I lived in 2 bedroom/1 bathroom house for a while when there was 5 of us (3 kids, 2 parents). It was fine. Needed more space when I had more siblings, though.

People are living longer now so no reason we can’t do 40-year or even half-century mortgages

A very significant percentage of the population, I would estimate around 60% of americas current adult pop, is not capable of maintaining a single family home. They aren’t cognitively able to understand and manage all of the responsibilities and challenges that come with owning one

No one ever talks about this, mostly because it’s “racist.” But there are white people who fall into this category too

We actually have plenty of single family housing inventory in this country. The problem is the civil rights act makes a large portion of it uninhabitable to the cohort of whites who would otherwise live in them. There ends up being a lot of “wasted” housing because the market can’t self correct like any other free market can

Agreed but I didn't want to seem like I was exaggerating. America's demographics and cultural customs are very very different now compared to the era in which society was built around everyone living in single family homes. Even among whites

The housing issue in this country is never addressed honestly by anyone because there are so many incentives in play to be dishonest about it

It’s crazy given how much land we have. Half the states barely allow new construction and we’re 3 million homes short of where we would without Great Recession and we’re falling further behind.
