Verlander. Better career WAR, and he leveraged his career to marry Kate Upton and impregnate her twice.

their stats are incredibly similar. is 1.7 career WAR statistically significant? kershaw has a much better ERA. both have 2 WS, 3 cy, 1 league MV.

i assume verlander has a higher WAR just because he played 3 more seasons

Good question. I was going to say Kershaw off the top of my head, but looking at it more closely, I’d give the edge to Verlander. Keeshaw’s ratio stats are better across the board, but Verlander’s pitched 700 more innings. Ultimately he was more valuable because he stayed in one piece most seasons.

Comparing postseasons:

Verlander: 17-12, 3.58

Kershaw: 13-13, 4.49

Edit:

As an aside, if you had to pick one to give the ball to in a Game 7, it easily would be Verlander. Kershaw consistently sucked in big games.

yes, but this is very different than the op, i.e., "better career"

u might want to give the game 7 ball to andy pettite over a lot of guys in the hall

Cr. I'm going to edit my poast above because I didn't mean to suggest this was my criterion to conclude that Verlander has been better. It was more of an aside.

is it fair to say verlander had a slightly better career due to consistency/longevity, but peak kershaw might have been slightly more dominant, and that verlander was a better postseason pitcher?

Kershaw should get a bit of a big game bump given his most famous flop was against the cheating Astros

Yeah, I was gonna say the same.

Kershaw has the classic tall white guy look, the Dodger blue looks great on everyone, one-team man, etc.

Verlander looks like of pudgy/scummy and has been on like 10 teams, but statisically and in big games probably better.

I say Kershaw subjectively because his career arc was what you expect from a hall of fame pitcher. He came in as a young top prospect and began to improve. Then he was universally considered the best pitcher in baseball for a long prime. Then he slowly declined and missed time because of injuries, but he was never bad.

Verlander's career was just all over the place with super high highs and lows and new teams and cumming on Kate Upton, etc.

doesnt WAR / ERA+ already account for that? verlander barely wins on WAR bc he's pitched 3 more years, and kershaw wins significantly on ERA+ (154 vs 128)

Preftige edge to Kershaw for spending his whole career with one team (and the most preftigious team for pitchers historically).

Kershaws career ERA is really insane, I would say he was the better pitcher at their peaks. But you probably gotta give the slight career edge to Verlander for the longevity and durability and Kershaw being a playoff choker.

Kershaw was better, but his career is kind of defined by underperforming in the playoffs and the what if of a decade of partial seasons due to "I can't, my back".
