They went from Favre to Rodgers to Love

Most franchises have a period with bust draft picks or journeymen while they’re trying to right the ship

Twice now we've drafted a guy with a 1st round pick and then sat (i.e. developed) him for 3 seasons. Nobody else does that.

Well the argument here is that those QBs would be a lot less likely to bust if they were given the development that Rodgers & Love got.

And we're not likely to statistically find out if the Rodgers/Love approach works because so few teams are going to waste draft capital on a QB when they have a competent QB that has a few years left in him.

It's not even clear if it was a perfect decision for the Packers. GB's front office took a lot of heat for drafting Love when they could have got a weapon for Rodgers. The year they drafted Love, Packers made the NFCCG and lost to the Buccs 26-31. Who knows what that game (and the Super Bowl?) might have looked like had the Packers drafted Tee Higgins or Michael Pittman Jr or Jonathon Taylor instead of Love.

So yeah, it's nice right now to have successfully transitioned to yet another franchise QB. But in an alternate universe we may have another championship.

I'd love to see the Rams draft a QB in the first round next year. Stafford is 37. They have Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett on the roster; I don't think either of those guys are franchise QBs. And they've got the capital to do something bold because they have the Falcons' 1st round pick.

Part of the reason Packers sucked for like 25 years post-Lombardi & pre-Holmgren is because of their governance structure. We famously are a community owned team, but what this meant for a long time is that the team was run by the local good ol' boys club. So there wasn't just one shitowner fucking things up, there was a cabal fucking things up.

So you ended up with things like Bart Starr being coach for 9 years, garnering a .408 record (he was also GM for 5 of those 9 years). Starr was a fantastic QB but it was reckless to install him as coach and GM, and retarded to not move on sooner.

Things changed in 1989 when Bob Harlan (announcer Kevin Harlan's dad) was promoted to president. "Harlan became the first team president whose background was primarily in football; all previous presidents of the Packers were local civic leaders or businessmen in the Green Bay, Wisconsin-area."

Harlan brought on Ron Wolf as GM and they've been run pretty professionally ever since.
