i have a lot of outdoor shit i need to plan around and i'd like to excuse it as just that, but i think it's just a symptom of being old as fuck.

been getting targeted ads for weather stations. very tempted to get one along with indoor and outdoor analog weather stations with a goethe's device. it used to be that every day was a surprise to me. when people talked about upcoming storms or snow i would enjoy being surprised and ignorant. now i find myself not just looking at temperature and conditions, but also getting into the nitty gritty like dew point, precipitation amount, time, radar, etc.

what is happening to me?

gunner have you ever read independce day by richard ford?

its a bit of a slog but goes deep into the mindset of a middle aged white man (I personally don't think you are indian, sorry). and this kind of weather interest/ conversation piece is explained really well as just a matter in which people will be agreeable

thank you saar i have not read but on your recommendation i have done the needful and purchased a copy so i can continue honing my ability to larp as a white man on here

but to be fair i hate banality and would not discuss the weather irl. i'm more the type to say something wild if people are engaging in idle chit chat just to spice things up. i'm reflecting on my increasing interest in it personally as i get older.

no. it's technically a trilogy but sportswriter is completely unrelated to the second. independence day is perfectly contained on its own.

the final one is interesting in its own way about the guy approaching death

yeah I think the most fascinating parts of this novel is he fact that smug lib boomers are never really captured in the arts despite being the most common people that we all meet. Most characters have some other special quirk and not just a dude paying his bills and trying to have a nice weekend with his kid

Sounds interesting but OP’s point was that he cares about the weather more, not necessarily that he talks about it more.

I have found this to be the case with me too. I never seemed to notice or care about the weather when I was younger. My prole parents didn’t even have central air (we had one wall unit in the living room we only used when people were over) and never remember thinking it was too hot or humid or anything. These days I obsess over whether it’s too hot or cold, constantly monitor precipitation, etc.

I think both things could be going on. I care more about birds and flowers than I ever did. I never noticed any of that before as a kid or 3o y/o

The part of the book that I am referencing is that he takes an increased interest in things that are not going to be controversial. He just wants to have pleasant conversations with strangers or his kid's friends' parents. No one is going to argue with him that it's 50% humidity. He doesn't need or want the conflict. It's about the banality of being a middle aged man and how they gravitate to these points of interest.

i'm a very curious person and always am finding new interests to delve into. but the weather thing is difference because it's not just about learning about how weather science works, but it's just caring every day about what the weather is. i used to be the guy who'd wear shorts in a blizzard and just not give a fuck. now i find myself preparing more. i wonder if it's because as i get older the weather effects me more. i can't shrug off walking around in below freezing without a coat and shit like i used to.

perhaps that's another reason why people tend to talk about the weather more as they get older. not just because it's banal and avoiding conflict, but because the subject has become important to them. dudes to tend to talk about whateverthefuck even if their audience isn't receptive just because it's important to them. like an autist going on for hours about trains at thanksgiving.
