His entire career was a forcememe after that. He never wrote another hit or had a successful record again. His vocals were "just a vibe" and his stuff would play in the background and you would recognize his distinctive voice but nobody could actually name one other song he wrote.
Sufjan was the same except he never had any hits to begin with. |

It might be a production trick where you send the vocals to a separate track with reverb on it and then mute the original vocal source so you're only hearing the effected channel. That's why the hos and heys sound like they are coming from a room down the hall or something. It's not just that they came up with the hos and heys but also the sort of very casual disembodied voice down the hall nature of it which I'm sure was copied a million times. One of the big turning points that ruined him was he went to music school and all the profs told him he had to study jazz. I remember him telling me about how jazz was the most important genre in music history. All the professors thought that jazz was extremely important. So instead of just being cool and writing heavy metal and rock riffs which everyone thought was the shit he got deep into impressing academics. I will never understand why somebody takes their instinctual passion for the arts and tosses it aside to impress a bunch of 55k salary academic fags. I guess he never had any guiding spirit to begin with. He was just waiting to get molded by someone else. Probably would have been a Scientologist or something. He ultimately was a beta pawn who got reprogrammed. |

And yes a lot of famous guitarists were turbo introverts. Page famously would tell his manager to go up to girls and tell them Jimmy thought they were cute because he was extremely shy.
Unfortunately for my schoolmate he didn't lay down anything of note before he converted to weird academic jazz/Mumford type. But yes he would have been better served just playing freely without caring what anyone thought.
All the best music is by people who were just winging it and following their creative instincts. Then everything gets gay after a while. |

He practiced enough that he became one with the instrument and has just going in every direction that makes him feel something or he finds interesting. Enough skill to amuse himself endlessly with the feelings the notes produce in him.
Funny thing is I know a lot of guys with this personality type who play this style of guitar but they just suck completely lol. The hard part is having the emotional instincts to go after notes that are really compelling. There are tons of introverted guitarists who spent their whole life with less than 10 fans because they just play uninteresting garbage when they're in the zone like this. It's really rare to have this talent. The skill and the drive and the innate ability to connect melodic dots. Only a handful of people have this in spades. You have to be extremely driven. I think for the 60s and 70s generation of players there was nothing else going on of interest to them so they really got deep into it. Like these guys didn't read or go to football matches or have the internet or buy real estate. They just did this all the time. This was it. |

Think about it, if they had been God's gift at songwriting they'd be some famous musician. If they had the ability to write anthemic rock or pop riffs and melodies don't you think they would have done it instead of be some lowly paid academic?
A different friend of mine who went to music school used to tell me that jazz was the most important genre because it was the only genre you had to study formally in order to appreciate it.
Now I'm not saying everything ought to sound like Sabrina Carpenter and be created by a large corporation whose job it is to come up with music for people while they're shopping at Ross. But a genre so sophisticated you have to study in in order to like of seems a bit much.
This goes back to one of the classic arguments about art dating back millenia. It's the reason why chess is so popular. So sophisticated you can lose yourself in it forever, yet so simple you can teach it to a child. Now imagine playing Miles Davis for a kid and them not being like wtf is this retarded bullshit. There's a balance, and jazz heads are way too up themselves. It's ultimately cope for people with no intrinsic musical talent to make something with greater appeal. Music is an art form that is almost entirely if not completely meant to be enjoyable. If you're not creating emotions that connect with an audience what are you doing? |

Seems like he should have been as big as Tame Impala but after an EP and two LPs he just fell off a cliff as a songwriter. Everything he did after Gossamer was pure garbage. Also probably didn't translate well to the live performance because it's so based on samples and production his live show is just him singing along to a laptop backing track.
Even Gossamer wasn't nearly as good as Manners but somehow got a shitload of radio play because of major label backing. And then when the record didn't sell he pretended to have mental health issues, and then when that didn't work he literally told people, "I'm gay." It was also strongly hinted at that he was never really gay and just said it to get out of his marriage and not get alimony pwnd because his ex wife felt bad for him. ODD CASE |
