I went for the battle scenes, fell asleep during pontificating and ethical dilemma parts. Had trouble paying attention throughout.

Should have been called "Most Boring War Movie Ever."

I thought it was awful. Just boring and went nowhere. I liked Tree of Life. I got the storyline there better.

Gets better with repeated viewings. Really beautiful cinematography.

It suffered from coming out around the same time as Saving Private Ryan.

The first 45 minutes of SPR was probably the best opening to any movie I'd ever seen. I literally felt like I was in battle storming the beaches of Normandy. It was awesome in the theater.

I was in college and had never seen a Malick movie and went in expecting the Pacific version of Saving Private Ryan. I had never seen a movie with major stars be so experimental and avant garde, it caused me to dive deep into the themes and meanings and led to me taking more philosophy classes such as Kierkegaard and obviously Heidegger. I eagerly await each new Malick film, although now I find them somewhat repetitive.

It’s not an overstatement to say that film changed my life.

Malick makes Films where someone narrates poetically while Events vaguely occur. Watch Days of Heaven. They're all The Same iirc.
