Russia still runs literal actual trains into Ukraine to this day.

they're not that hard to build or fix. russia built an entirely new line connecting rostov, donetsk, melitopol, and crimea last year.

You're supposed to derail a train first. That alone creates problems, separate from any damage to the tracks.

Then you sabotage or snipe/bomb the repair crews. They are costly to replace, and the job will be seen as high risk.

Why not use train derailers or bury high explosives under the track with an anti armor mine? There is no way to monitor all that rail.

That's it. Derailing a train is way easier than trying to destroy the tracks using other means. Save the HIMARS for the repair crews who try to repair the tracks.

It seems like this would be a highly useful strategy if it worked. If russia’s train logistics got fucked up, they would have very serious problems. There has to be a reason why they aren’t doing this

Fuck, how would Russians even remove all the debris from one derailed train without getting sniped by partisans in the bushes? They'd have to clear the whole area before they could even begin laying down new tracks. The derailed train cars themselves would be inside Ukrainian territory, so they could be looted (surely they'd be full of weapons and ammo and cash/diamonds) and repurposed. Too bad no one's invented a time machine!
