I'm nordic and my people evolved with endless summer days and long, dark winters. We developed a “light-linked” neurochemical balance that is very delicate. I get suicidally depressed at the onset of fall every year & that's my sign to start taking vitamin d again.
Caffeine hacks the adenosine system and boosts dopamine, & hits the autistic nordoid brain like a sledgehammer.
Coffee is from like ethiopia & yemen, those people were chewing khat for thousands of years already so they had tolerance to alkaloids. nordoids brewed drinks from birch bark, pine needles, etc. Which had very mild plant alkaloids, but nothing close to caffeine levels in coffee.
Over generations nordoid metabolism became hypersensitive to strong stimulants because the baseline was weak, woodsy tonics. Then coffee arrives in the 18th century and just blows people's brains out.
