I thought the first half was really good, where it's a straightforward movie about a diving mission, then it goes off the rails with the alien shit. I watched the directors cut I guess and it was nearly 3 hours long and had some gay heavy-handed "war bad" ending that the theatrical release doesn't

But it is a beautiful looking movie. It would have been a 180 twist if the aliens were evil and the navy seal dude was right to nuke them

it had a mixed reception when it was released and is the least well-regarded Cameron film afaik.

I must've watched it 25+ times as a kid, it was a staple on HBO.

People didn't understand at the time that Cameron based the film on the reality of advanced entities living in ocean trenches.

part of a big wave of underwater movies following the discovery of the Titanic wreck.

leviathan > deep star six > the abyss, as far as 1989 sci-fi horror films go.

personally found the abyss boring. and if you don't like schlocky 80s horror you won't enjoy the other two.

It’s fine. Not regarded as a masterpiece, but the cgi effects with the water were the absolute bleeding edge of movie technology.
