I can't think of a time when I heard a lawyer introduce themselves to another lawyer as "a civil attorney" because in that case you would just state your practice area.

The phrase “civil attorney” isn’t standard lawyer-to-lawyer terminology in the U.S. • Big firm lawyers almost never use it. They’ll describe themselves (and colleagues) by practice group or specialty: litigator, M&A lawyer, antitrust partner, securities litigator, restructuring associate, etc. If someone said “I’m a civil attorney” at a large firm, it would sound imprecise and unsophisticated. • Small general-practice lawyers (sometimes derisively called “shitlaw” when they handle a grab-bag of divorces, PI cases, landlord-tenant, wills, contracts, etc.) are more likely to use “civil attorney” as shorthand. It distinguishes them from “criminal defense attorney” in language that non-lawyers understand. For marketing to clients who don’t know legal categories, “civil attorney” can be clearer.
So: it’s mostly a layman-facing phrase, used more in small firm / generalist settings than in biglaw.
