My friend is pissed because his parents are loaded, but it is sounding like him and his siblings may not inherit the fortune - the bulk of it is going to go to universities.
The friend is probably a little mad they're not going to get a free $20 mm, but is also pissed because they think their parents legacy is just going to get eaten up by these schools (which have entire depts to scam boomers like this) and five years after the parents are dead the university will not give a shit about them at all.
I get why the parents don't want to just give $20 million to their kids, and suggested his parents put in a trust so future generations could use it to pay for education or a downpayment on a house or something.
At the very least they could give the money to a local charity or school that actually needs the money - rather than one that has $10 billion and still makes kids take out $250,000 in loans to attend.
I get that it isn't his money, but he's not wrong that this is the dumbest thing his parents could do with it.

The best part is
(i) their grandkids probably will never get into the schools because there's no money left
(ii) if they do get in, everyone will assume that its because the dining hall is named after them
(iii) Even though the dining hall is named after them, they'll have to go $300,000 in debt to attend teh school

Are they are buying a name for something with this? Maybe a building name is out of reach with such a middling sum, but what about an endowed chair?
The [X] Family Chair of Boomer Studies, or something like that

If they're earmarking it for research funding then CR. If it's to pay for a dorm or something that's dumb.
Of course lol @ the shitkids who have to work for a living.

I think research can be legit.
But my guess it will be earmarked for the "XYZ chair of Chemistry" or something - which to me is no different than giving it to a dorm or a cafeteria since money is fungible.
They're just going to shift the money saved to DEI consultants and admins.
