Arrest after standoff, suspect charged with 2 deadly shootings in one Upstate city
Union Public Safety officials have charged a suspect in connection with two shooting incidents. They said 21-year-old Zaedan Mack Hill acted alone and is being charged with both shooting incidents.
Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the SLED Swat team, and Union Public Safety Officers responded to a home on South Church Street in Union, South Carolina in reference to two shooting incidents.
"I would like to thank the ones in the public who have come forward with information," Police Chief Robbie McGee said. "Those are the people that have helped. Those are the people that make this happen. That's how we're able to have two murders on Tuesday, and it's solved on Thursday."
McGee said Hill will be facing two counts of murder, two counts of possessing a weapon while committing a felony and one count of armed robbery.
During a bond hearing Friday night, Hill was denied bond.
The 16th Circuit Solicitor's Office said they have not yet decided if they will be pursuing the death penalty in Hill's case.
On Tuesday, 49-year-old Kiran Patel was found dead in the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store after a call about a man shooting at people.
They also responded to a shooting Tuesday on South Mountain Street. In that case, 67-year-old Charles Nathan Crosby was found dead in the yard of a home with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
"It wasn't long after that we were able to connect the two cases based on the shell casings that were recovered at both scenes," McGee said.
Officials said SLED was able to call everyone out of the South Church Street home, except for the suspect. They said the standoff lasted for several hours, and the suspect eventually exited the home without harm or further incident.
Investigators could be seen going in and out of the home Friday afternoon as part of a search warrant.
"There's a lot of area in that house to search. We're still looking for a lot of evidence," McGee said.
According to Union Public Safety officials, Hill was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, and then to the Union County Detention Center.
McGee said he believes robbery was a motive in Patel's death but is unsure of the motive behind Crosby's death.
"At this point, we're assuming the same, but we aren't certain that Mr. Crosby had anything on him," McGee said. "We're still tracking down some leads to determine whether he had anything that could have been taken."
