the 'nirvana killed hair metal' timeline is flatly incorrect; nevermind went to #1 at the start of 1992 after gaining a lot of hype toward the end of 1991.

but then in may, def leppard's 'adrenalize' became one of the biggest records of the year, topping the album charts for over a month. adrenalize knocked the wayne's world soundtrack from the top spot, which was itself a mix of classic rock and hair rock.

other hair metal bands like Saigon Kick had the biggest hits of their careers specifically in the summer of 1992 ('Love Is On the Way,' in their case). GNR's november rain was a #3 single in september of '92. secondary hair metal acts like Firehouse had top 10 singles in the fall/winter of '92 (When I Look into Your Eyes, etc.).

the ACTUAL death of hair metal took place in the fall and winter of 1993, going into 1994. GNR's spaghetti incident underperformed in november, and record labels became a lot more reluctant to promote the genre. acts like bon jovi stayed viable by transitioning to pop; other acts which tried to go 'grunge' generally failed.

but there was a period of about two years in which grunge/nirvana and hair metal were commercial juggernauts, side-by-side. and this seems forgotten.

this is correct. those of us who were there well remember hair metal kings battling grunge cucks for the soul of america in 1992-93.

hair metal was on the way out eventually in any case, but grunge itself was not its 'replacement,' since the grunge scene was in steep decline by 1997/1998.

the 80's 'adult contemporary' genre changed and declined almost directly alongside hair metal, but i never see anyone blaming nirvana for knocking bruce hornsby and the range off the charts.

i touched on this in a recent poast about how i reacted to the advent of grunge (which came about two years after i discovered punk). nirvana was popping, but at the same time, MTV was running news stories about people waiting in line to buy use your illusion and metallica the black album upon their release, and bands like poison and warrant were still putting out records. the labels were hedging their bets, they didn't just abandon butt rock, it took a while.

that said, the takeover was very fast. i remember smells liek teen spirit starting to get heavy play on MTV in around september 91, and by the following spring break, hair metal was already a joke to most people.
