crucial errors.

First, they underestimated the scale of migration that was coming. Second, they failed to appreciate the political reaction to that migration — believing that stronger enforcement would alienate Latino and progressive voters, and also that a border surge would not be an important issue to most voters. Those calculations would later prove to be mistaken, with many voters, including Latinos, citing immigration as a reason for supporting Mr. Trump in 2024.

“Everybody was reacting to the excesses of the Trump administration,” said Cecilia Muñoz, who helped shape immigration policy in the Obama administration and oversaw domestic and economic policy for the Biden transition team.

problem ran deeper than Republican obstruction.

The Biden White House “had no strategy, because they had no goal,” said Scott Shuchart, who joined the administration in 2022 as a senior adviser at Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “All they had was wishing the problem would go away so that they could focus on the things they cared about.”

A spokeswoman for Mr. Biden declined to make him available for an interview. She provided a statement that blamed Republicans for blocking additional funding for hiring more border agents, deploying more security technology and processing immigration cases more quickly. The statement also blamed Republicans for walking away from the proposed border bill “because Donald Trump told them to.”

“When it became clear Congress wouldn’t act, Biden took decisive action on his own,” the statement said.

Mr. Klain defended the administration’s actions on immigration as part of a broader set of priorities.

“We came in during an economic collapse and 3,000 Americans dying each day from Covid. We focused on those first and got both turned around quickly,” he said. “We ended the cruelty of Trump’s immigration policies but hit a wall on building a sensible asylum system when Republicans blocked action on needed legislation.”

But former advisers said the problem ran deeper than Republican obstruction.

The Biden White House “had no strategy, because they had no goal,” said Scott Shuchart, who joined the administration in 2022 as a senior adviser at Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “All they had was wishing the problem would go away so that they could focus on the things they cared about.”

Three weeks after closing the border, the president faced off against Mr. Trump in a debate at CNN’s Atlanta studios. Asked why voters should trust him to solve the crisis, Mr. Biden flubbed it.

“What I’ve done — since I’ve changed the law, what’s happened?” said Mr. Biden, who had not changed the law. “I’ve changed it in a way that now you’re in a situation where there are 40 percent fewer people coming across the border illegally.”

Mr. Biden went on: “I’m going to continue to move until we get the total ban on the … the total initiative relative to what we’re going to do with more Border Patrol and more asylum officers.”

“I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence,” Mr. Trump responded. “I don’t think he knows what he said either.”

Within a month, Mr. Biden left the race.

90 IQ conservatives will read this and think, wow it took them a while but even the NYT now acknowledges the problem, this is some progress at least.

In reality, this is a whitewash. Blame the old regime for “miscalculating” something and move on. The new folks running in the midterms are different.

Except every Democrat understood and continues to understand the short term political price they will pay for open borders, and they don’t care. It’s a long term play for demographic change and voters. This wasn’t a miscalculation, and the NYT reporting here is part of the playbook of getting to the long term solution with the lowest possible long term blowback.

cr.

the NYT and WaPo are trade press: their function is to signal to those in the industry (elite libs and uni-party GOP) what the party line is moving forward.

cr, article is clearly just trying to pin the blame on the old man who's out of the picture, but i'd sure be interested to hear what any younger democrat would actually do differently

Readers Picks in the Comments show a lot of bitterness at Dems and at the NYT too.

All he had to do was follow Obama’s example— the myopic stupidity of his inner circle still boggles the mind. I saw Biden was losing on this issue by early 2023 and I’m a basic nobody out there in the hinterland. How could they BE so wrong?! And I also could see, Trump or no Trump, that the GOP would eviscerate the Dems on this issue and win. Border security is national security and that’s a president’s #1 responsibility to his country. How do Dems not understand this?! Their stupidity gave us Trump. I voted for Biden & thought he did an admirable job in many ways, but this oversight changed our whole country for the worse, it’s tragic & almost unforgivable.

I’m convinced Biden’s handling of the border sealed Trump’s 2024 victory. Hindsight is of course twenty twenty but the crisis and the political ramifications were obvious at the time, and instead his administration ignored warnings and gaslit the public. Such a shame as we now endure the consequences.

This article clearly shows why the Democrats cannot be allowed back into the White House. No one in the party is articulating any sort of change in their permissive immigration policy, and instead do nothing but criticize Trump. I expect if a Democrat wins in 2028 the country will go right back to Biden's catastrophic policies. That is, unless a Democrat with the guts to stand up to the far left emerges.

These people thought they could win the votes of American Latinos by gutting immigration enforcement. I think that says a lot about their worldview: identity concerns trump everything, even rule of law.

There’s nothing inhumane about closing your door (border) until you have your internal house in order. Biden team messed this one up royally. I truly think we might’ve avoided Trump 2.0 (not to mention Trump very likely would have been prosecuted on the documents case)

This is why those associated with the Biden Administration should never be hired by a future dem administration. The immigration problem was clear to the average democrat. Our social services are paid by taxpayer dollars. You can not add an influx of individuals who require social support (housing, school, food, health) to communities that are struggling in a changing economy when inflation was & still is high & jobs are going off-shore or being obsoleted due to tech and the instabilities of the pandemic. American citizens are being squeezed, it was inevitable they would align to push back against immigration.

Why did we not see pieces like this during the Biden administration? Instead of doing your job reporting the facts, what Left Wing media did instead was protect the administration and obfuscate the facts.

Maybe Biden would have done something different if there was honest criticism of his flawed border policies. I understand the motivation for his 180 on this issue when he came to office, but he should have soon realized the weaknesses in his methods and corrected course while being humane.

And look what failures of Biden have led to - the pendulum has swung to the other end, so much misery and cruelty! Biden is partly to blame, and so is mainstream media.

Please do better.
