The captain was running behind schedule that day so decided to take a really risky route, and also decided to take a nap during the route. They also didn’t have enough ballast water so they couldn’t fit or cargo on the ship.
Idiot ferry captain didn’t know whether to tell people to abandon ship and asked coast guard if he should. They said “use your judgement” and the captain instead decided to just abandon ship himself while loud speakers kept telling the students to stay in their rooms.
President and her staff were beyond useless. Instead of giving any instructions the staff kept demanding that they be given a video feed so they could show the President. President spent the whole day in her bedroom.
Coast guard had no idea there were people trapped even though they saw no one in the water. Talked about “needing to land on the ferry for a photo op so we look good.”
Only one coast guard boat showed up and it ordered Good Samaritan fishing vessels to leave even through they were the only ones helping the few people out of the water who decided to jump overboard.
Coast Guard high command finally decided they should try and tell people in the fairy to abandon ship, only after the ship was mostly underwater.
When the president arrived on scene that evening there was just a little part of the ferry still sticking out of the water, and they came up with this stupid plan to pump air into the ferry to make it rise even though they knew that would never work. Then worse, The guy in charge of this operation couldn’t even connect the hose properly but because the president was there he said they needed to put on a show, so far an hour or two they pretended to be pumping air into the boat but really they were just pumping air into the water, and during this charade the boat disappeared under the ocean.
300 students drowned to death even though they could have easily jumped overboard at the beginning.
