You have a closed mind, so why would you pay someone for a year to open what you have closed.

You really are just paying someone to listen to you and be nice to you. On rare occasions they'll give useful advice. There's no real science behind it, and if you're cynical about it, you might think the therapist doesn't want you to get better because then their source of income dries up. Is that too cynical? In my experience, that's reality. If you read about the guidelines and techniques behind CBT, the only form of therapy that has some evidence behind it, it's supposed to be a structured, time-limited technique that involves you doing homework in between sessions to identify, unwind, address, and dismantle the negative thoughts and beliefs that are the source of your distress. You'll have to cycle through tens of therapists to find someone who will actually do this; the rest rely on generic "talk therapy" that just brings in a steady income irrespective of your (lack of) improvement.

There's no such thing as a therapist. What you're describing as an effective therapist is just a "teacher," which begs the questing of whether they have knowledge to teach.

What I've described as an effective therapist is the gold-standard approach for CBT as popularized by a psychiatrist from Stanford. But you bring up an important point that I didn't mention: a good therapist should have the knowledge and wisdom to gently guide you toward resolving your distress, which they often lack.

I don't really care if some nerds rigged some "randomized control trials." What they're doing by your own account can be done by a 100 iq woman whose other career option is to teach 8th grade.

i've seen three therapists and came to similar conclusions. i saw each one for progressively shorter times. i gave up after only three sessions with the last one when i realized it was a fraud. at least my psychiatrist gives me pills that do something
