Harvard rankings of economic complexity find that Australia has the export profile of a developing third world nation. We are ranked 102nd out of 145 countries, behind Bangladesh and sub-Saharan African countries. And our commodities exports are massively exposed to China which regularly threatens to cut off Australia if our government angers them. Just yesterday they announced that they are suspending all BHP iron imports.
We have one of the worst productivity performances in the OECD. Productivity has actually declined in Australia in recent years so the government runs an extremely high rate of mass migration to try stop the country from falling into a headline GDP recession. This strategy artificially masks years of declines in living standards.
They need to keep pumping migration otherwise falling demand will eventually lead to the collapse of the housing market and with it our major banks.
5 of the 10 most valuable public companies in Australia are banks. 3 banks make up the top 5.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia is the 13th largest bank in the world by market cap despite doing basically no business outside of Oceania. It trades at 3.5x price-to-book (big US banks 0.9-2.4x). Dividend yield below 3%.
The government wants to keep the Ponzi scheme going by now lowering mortgage deposits to 5%.
In short, we are fucked, and we haven’t even hit the economic implosion yet.
When it eventually hits it will crush our democracy and lead to a massive growth in both left wing and right wing extremism.
