It was never the expectation in the past that fathers would really be involved in their kids lives beyond some shared interests, mild encouragement, and making sure they don't fuck up. Fathers were a guide, an example, not your BFF.
Part of this is necessitated by the internet being a nightmare for parents to deal with, but a nontrivial fraction of it is radically altered societal attitudes towards how parents, and especially fathers, are expected to interact with children. And this shift is much more noticable in America than e.g. Europe outside the UK, although Europoors in general have basically stopped reproducing so the American attitude is coming to dominate how Westerners raise kids. |

There's a lack of ambition today among men. One of my friends is a brilliant guy but he works a menial job. He never pushed himself. Wife and 1 kid. He has the smarts to do something really special for instance he's incredible at math. He could have gotten a PhD. He could have been a quant. He makes just enough money to be LMC in flyover. I can't imagine if my dad had just checked out like that and been average. And yeah everyone respects him and he's the boss and his wife does all the cooking and cleaning.
