China needs lots of petrochemicals and commodities like helium if they want to stay competitive, particularly with AI. And oil does matter. 8% is huge and China has zero control over iran. The US just turned the spigot down on energy to SE Asia (while US exports boom), and neighboring countries are choosing the US.
