In the 1980s, AT&T reduced investments in cell towers due to McKinsey's prediction that there would only be 900,000 cell phone subscribers by 2000. According to The Firm this was "laughably off the mark" from the 109 million cellular subscribers by 2000

McKinsey was hired by General Motors to do a large-scale re-organization to help it compete with Japanese auto-makers. The book The Firm said it was an "unmitigated disaster" because McKinsey focused on corporate structure, whereas GM needed to compete with Japanese automakers through manufacturing process improvement. A McKinsey consultant said GM did not follow their advice.

McKinsey is famous in consulting for being a tool of the board/CEO. They will go behind the CEOs back even and directly approach board members they have a comfy relationship with.

McK absolutely has manufacturing expertise, but I can bet that GM did not want to do the hard work of altering highly unionized manufacturing and wanted to focus on rearranging the deck chairs for wall street's benefit.

A 2002 article in BusinessWeek said that a series of bankruptcies of McKinsey clients, such as Swissair, Kmart, and Global Crossing, in the 1990s raised questions as to whether McKinsey was responsible or had a lapse in judgement.[33] McKinsey recommended that Swissair avoid high operating costs in its home country by developing partnerships with airlines based in other regions. In order to attract partners, Swissair acquired more than $1 billion in shares of other airlines, many of which were failing. This led to huge losses for Swissair.

New York City paid McKinsey $27.5 million between 2014 and 2017 to reduce prison assaults in Rikers Island; but the violence grew and the city abandoned many of the firm’s recommendations.

Big consulting exists for one reason and that is to confer responsibility for decisions away from executives. They will tell you anything you pay them to and are basically scapegoats for hire.

It's also a way to absorb any Preps/Jews etc. who aren't picked up by other professions for whatever reason. It's an enforcement of the Clique System. Companies that are mainly staffed by Scumbags and Losers and a few Nerds hire Firms consisting of Preps to tell them the best way to destroy their hapless and unworthy employees. There is a System that requires enforcing imho and it transcends capitalism/business operations/"common sense."

You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and I won't have it! Is that clear?! Do you think you've merely stopped an executive hire? That is not the case. The Nerds have taken billions of dollars out of this company, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance! You are an old man who thinks in terms of executives and financial statements. There are no profits. There are no employees. There are no Chads. There are no Melvins. There is no 40 under 40. There is no Who’s Who. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multi-variate, multi-national dominion of Cliques. Nerd-Cliques, Loser-Cliques, Jock-Cliques, Scumbags, Preps, Jockgineers, low and ascended. It is the international system of Cliques which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and sub-atomic and galactic structure of things today! And you have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and You Will Atone!

Consulting is 99.9% about Clique. When you ask, "why does x industry/job exist? It serves no economic function!" just think Clique and the answer will reveal itself. It explains innumerable phenomena, among them tipping (rewarding Hot Girls for their phenotypes), consulting, many sales jobs, realtors, and so forth.

More true outside their NY and SF offices. But there are V20-tier associates who strike out with those MBB offices and value being in the city more than preftige.

Among partners you're correct.

I don't get how there's one set of rules that says these firms are full of useless dickheads and the whole game is fraudlies but if some 21 year old or late 20s MBA grad we know gets a job doing this we congratulate them

It really is strange. In industry, engaging a consulting firm is often seen as a foolish CYA or seen as someone got in over their heads, so they called in the hired guns who are now going to extract way too much value via their fees. The people who know what they are doing use consultants sparingly and for very specific tasks, not for a strategy jam session. Despite all that, those same exec's often really value the work experience. There really are lots of jobs out there that are basically reserved for MBB alumni. I've run into several of these positions.

This thread is making these consultants look like even bigger frauds than mutual fund managers. At least the fund bros don't usually DRAMATICALLY lose, it sounds like these McKinsey dudes are worse than asking your dog for advice.

Consultants can't be right all the time, hindsight 20/20, and all that. Its equally plausible that these each of these businesses had already decided on what they wanted to do and McK was brought it to check the box. That stuff happens pretty often.

Everyone knows how McKinsey works. The CEO hires them to agree with the CEO’s idea, then if it goes wrong later on the CEO can say to the board, “well look I hired McKinsey And they recommended it”

very much so

but exactly that should be an argument for firing the ceo.

so why don’t board members generally do that?

there comes the real argument of McK: the network, the being everywhere

board members and ceos are highly likely to meet McK wherever they have other board positions or in their current or next jobs.

most executives sense both potential rewards for friendly relations and potential threats for less friendly relations.

It is much like the strategy and position developed by Goldman during the 90s and perfected to a formidable threats/rewards machine in this century.
