It was modern, industrialized, relatively liberal, and the Jews there were pretty assimilated compared to, for example, almost all of Eastern Europe. France, with the Dreyfus Affair recently behind it, was considered more anti-semitic than Germany. Spain and Italy not much better. England kicked most of their Jews out in the Middle Ages. So Germany seemed pretty safe. Impossible Germany. |
