I've watched spiders for years and think they are able to solve spatial problems pretty well. It takes me back to childhood when I spent a lot of time watching ants. It didn't seem possible that ants could do what they do with their tiny little physical brains, so I developed the notion that their brains extended into hyperspace so that they were effectively much larger.

This video explains how orb weavers use their webs as giant external eardrums, and how they tune them to filter out noise from wind and birds and stuff. They say it's a more effective design than any eardrum we've ever analyzed in any animal.

It’s interesting how life itself solves problems. The collective system seems intelligent.

No, these things are totally different from other arthropods. There's nothing else like them on land or in the ocean

there is a beautiful little crab spider parked under my front door threshold. He's waiting for me to step outside and not shut the door behind me so he can get into the house and lay low for the winter. At first I was not keen on this idea, but the more I think about, the more it seems to make sense.

Tomorrow, I am going to walk to the end of the driveway and I am not going to shut the front door behind me. He will have 3 minutes.

I like it, but what's the control for your study on arachnid temporal cognition?

I had a pet spider as a child that I found and put in a fish aquarium. I fed it grasshoppers and kept it alive for a long time despite knowing nothing about it. I cried when it finally died.

I'm kind to spiders and carefully move them outside if they come into the house.
