Jews went for centuries without a king, then boom! God gave them a king. But the king still had to earn it.
Both the prolonged absences of a king and the fact that David had to earn his title are offered as evidence against the divine right of kings. Pretty powerful stuff.

God went on a giant rant in the bible about how they shouldn't appoint a king, it was a terrible idea, and they were fools to consider it.
as usual, the heebs ignored Him.

Yeah Locke is saying kinghood isn't something you can just inherit from Adam. That's what these kings were claiming. They said "Adam was an absolute monarch, and so were Adam's sons, and I can trace my lineage to one of Adam's sons."
Locke was saying hey look at King Fucking David. By the time he became King, he had all kinds of IRL achievements under his belt. He never said "I inherited this from God." So I don't think Locke's reading is orthogonal to yours at all.
Locke also psychoanalyzes God a bit. He says that at the time God was giving Adam "dominion" over certain things, he was pissed off and cursing Adam out, if anything. God certainly wasn't in the mood to do Adam any favors.
